Before you flash

A few tips, blah blah blah.

Honestly: read these. They cover the 90% of issues that show up in our support channels.

Tip · 01💾

Use a real USB stick

USB 3.0 or better, 4GB minimum. Cheap SD card adapters and old USB 2.0 hubs cause phantom install errors that look like kernel bugs.

Tip · 02🔒

Verify the checksum

Every ISO is signed with Ed25519. Always run sha256sum before flashing — a one-bit flip silently breaks the installer.

Tip · 03🔋

Plug in the charger

Installation takes 6–12 minutes. A laptop dying mid-partition is the fastest way to brick a perfectly good drive.

Tip · 04🧪

Try live mode first

The installer boots into a fully working desktop. Click around, test Wi-Fi, suspend the lid — nothing is written to disk until you say so.

Tip · 05💼

Back up your files

Even a perfect install needs a partition table. We assume nothing is irreplaceable on the target drive — you should too.

Tip · 06🔐

Disable Secure Boot (or not)

NoovexOS ships signed bootloaders for Microsoft's keys. If your BIOS is locked-down corporate, you may still need IT to enroll our key.

Tip · 07📶

Wired network helps

First-boot pulls ~400 MB of updates. Ethernet is faster and never drops mid-install. Wi-Fi works fine — just slower.

Tip · 08🌡

Let it breathe

Compiling the initial kernel modules pushes the CPU. Install on a hard surface, not your bed — thermal throttling can stall the post-install step.

Tip · 09📓

Read the release notes

Every v3.x bump has a 2-minute changelog. The known-issues section is where the gotchas live — your model might be in there.

Install in 4 steps

From zero to first login.

  1. 01
    Download & verify
Grab the ISO, check the SHA-256, sign your name in the guestbook (optional).
  2. 02
    Flash the USB
Balena Etcher on macOS / Windows, dd on Linux. Takes 2 minutes on a decent stick.
  3. 03
    Boot live
Hold the boot menu key (F12 / Option). Pick the USB. The desktop loads in 8 seconds.
  4. 04
    Install
Open the installer, pick a disk, pour a coffee. You'll be logged in before it's cold.
Hardware check

Will it run on your laptop?

Anything in this list works out of the box — Wi-Fi, trackpad, fingerprint reader, the lot.
